A number of years ago, Caroline Myss, the revered spiritual guide, medical intuitive, and author of many books on human consciousness, came to my town for a reading. As always, her words were insightful and stretched the bounds of the seen and understood (if you have the chance to hear her or to take one of her courses - you will be changed!).
Apparently my being there that day was “meant to be” because I was able to ask her a question that had been haunting my whole life. Knowing that I can’t intervene every time I am made aware of a need, how do I know when to help? Her answer…
“You have to cultivate and trust your intuition, then listen to it. If you feel called to help, you should. If you don’t, keep on moving with the awareness that you are creating the space for someone who does feel called, to respond. And if no one steps up to help, the person in need will live that experience.”
This wasn’t a shallow “what will be, will be” response or a rationalization for turning our backs on each other. To the contrary, I realized it is up to each of us to develop that sense of knowing, that sense of informed decision-making, that is at once compassionate and cognizant of individual limitations. It is a call to have trust in the collective, the interconnectedness of all beings to do what we can, when we can, where we can and know that others will do the same.
